Substance Abuse in the LGBTQ Community

Diversity and toleranceDespite ongoing efforts to banish bullying of people who are part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) community, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIH) reports that people who identify with the group face social stigma, discrimination, and other challenges more often than people who are heterosexual. The NIH says this group not only faces a greater risk of harassment and violence but also run an increased risk for various behavioral health issues, including addiction. In fact, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) reports that teenaged lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders are two times more likely to experiment with drugs and alcohol than their straight peers.
